Real Project: Removing Seven Layers of Paint From a Brick Fireplace


These photos show a brick fireplace with at least seven layers of paint that had accumulated over many years.

The homeowner had recently purchased the home and wanted to restore the original brick but quickly realized the project was far more complicated than expected. As an architect, he understood the value of preserving the masonry and was concerned about damaging the brick with aggressive DIY methods or using harsh chemicals inside his home.

After evaluating the fireplace, we selected EACO Chem’s InStrip®, a professional masonry paint remover specifically formulated for brick and masonry surfaces.

Unlike many paint removers, InStrip® remains active for an extended period, allowing it to soften multiple layers of paint rather than simply attacking the top coat.

Our process included:

  • Applying a uniform coat of InStrip® to the painted masonry.
  • Covering the product with laminated paper to slow evaporation and keep the stripper active.
  • Allowing the product to dwell for the recommended time so it could penetrate multiple layers of paint.
  • Carefully removing the softened paint without abrasive grinding or blasting.
  • Repeating the process where additional paint layers remained.
  • Cleaning the masonry and evaluating the exposed brick for any repairs that may have been concealed beneath the paint.

Paint removal is rarely a one-step process. Projects with multiple layers of paint often require patience, multiple applications, and careful evaluation to achieve the best possible results while protecting the masonry beneath.
